Assia Djebar, professor of French and an internationally acclaimed novelist, translator, playwright, essayist, and filmmaker, is an innovative stylist who seeks to retrace the fight for liberation led by women of her native Algeria and creates narratives - in literature, theater, and film - of Islamic memory and history from the point of view of Muslim women.
Essay I had the honor of being named Silver Chair in April, 2002. This appointment emphasized, via my teaching and research, the role of Francophone culture and literature within the French Department and at New York University more generally.
