John Guillory has been a Professor in the Department of English since 1999, arriving at NYU from Harvard University. He is among the leading literature scholars in the country. His primary research interests include Renaissance poetry, Shakespeare, Milton, literature and science in the Renaissance, the history of criticism, the sociology of literary study and twentieth-century literary theory. He earned his B.A. from Tulane University (1974) and his Ph.D. from Yale University (1979). Dr. Guillory is widely published and his major works include Poetic Authority: Spenser, Milton and Literary History (Columbia University Press, 1983) and Culture Capital: The Problem of Literary Canon Formation (University of Chicago Press, 1993), which was honored with the Rene Wellek Award of the American Comparative Literature Association. Dr. Guillory has also served on the editorial boards of English Literary History and Profession. He is currently serving on the Executive Council of the Modern Language Association. |
